Anne Lamont-Low

Christchurch-based contralto Anne Lamont-Low was born in England and immigrated to New Zealand 15 years ago. As a recorder player, she was a founding member of the group Sarabande, and from there moved into vocal music of the Baroque with the formation of the duo-ensemble Orpheus. She has studied the wider repertoire with Christchurch singing teachers Rosemary Turnbull, Annelies Pekelharing and Mary Adams Taylor, and recently studied in London with expatriate New Zealander David Harper.

Anne performs frequently with the Christchurch City Choir, most recently in the role of Marthe in the acclaimed concert performance of Gounod’s Faust. Her repertoire includes Bach’s St Matthew and St John Passions, Mass in B Minor, and Magnificat; Handel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus; and Vivaldi’s Gloria. In 1995, as alto soloist with the CBS Choir, she had the privilege to perform in many of the major European cathedrals, and to present recitals with Orpheus in Salamanca University and the delightful Sainte-Chapelle, Paris.

Anne made her operatic debut in 1996 with Canterbury Opera in the role of Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and has understudied several roles for the company. She featured as a soloist in this year’s BellSouth Candlelight Opera, and later in the year she will take a principal role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

In recital she has appeared in the Festival of Romance and in the Smokefree concert series. Invitations outside of Christchurch have taken her to Otago University, Auckland, the Queenstown Festival, and Craigmore, as well as to her home town of Sunderland. She has made several recordings for Concert FM.
